The Clinton Lady Arrows Volleyball team (29-7; 4-1) has their sights on a state championship, and Thursday’s match against Starkville was the first step to getting to the top of the mountain.
After starting off slow and dropping the first set to Starkville 25-19, the Lady Arrows regrouped and took the next three sets (25-18; 25-17; 25-17) to secure a first round win .
The 3-1 win sends Clinton to the second round where they will host DeSoto Central (30-8-1; 4-1) in the CHS Gymnasium on Tuesday, October 22.
Coach Megan Brown said she was proud of her young team’s ability to rally as a team to defeat a talented Starkville team.
“Our confidence grew as the match progressed,” Brown said, “but against DeSoto Central, we need to start off confident and not take a set to warm up.”
She said the team houses a winning attitude knowing they must work together to attain a championship.
“Our theme going forward is to believe in ourselves from the start. We’ve gotten down on ourselves before, focusing on the negative,” Brown said.
“But with the confidence gained from this season, the girls feel like they can make it to the end.”
The Lady Arrows host the DeSoto Central Lady Jaguars at 5:30 P.M. on Tuesday, October 22 at Clinton High School.
The two teams previously met in August where the Lady Arrows defeated DeSoto Central 2-1 (22-25; 25-21; 15-13).
